MASS MoCA announces Fall 2023 programmingFeaturing the exhibition Like Magic; performances by Alvvays, serpentwithfeet, Beverly Glenn-Copeland, Troker, and others; new residencies and in-progress performances; a community event with Little Amal; and artists in conversation North Adams, MA, August 9, 2023 — MASS MoCA is pleased to announce its Fall 2023 programming. Programs include events related to MASS MoCA's newest exhibition — Like Magic, which opens on October 29 (with a member preview October 28) — as well as concerts, community events, and so much more, the fall season has something for everyone. Ticketed events go on sale to MASS MoCA members beginning Wednesday, August 9, at 12pm EST. General tickets go on sale beginning Friday, August 11, at 10am EST. EXHIBITIONS Like Magic | On view beginning October 29, 2023 In times of chaos and uncertainty, people often turn towards technologies of magic — including devices, talismans, rituals, and incantations — for solace and strength. Like Magic features ten contemporary artists who adopt technologies of magic: Simone Bailey, Raven Chacon, Grace Clark, Johanna Hedva, Gelare Khoshgozaran, Cate O’Connell-Richards, Rose Salane, Petra Szilagyi, Tourmaline, and Nate Young. The phrase “like magic” can be understood to mean an affinity for magic, or an effect that seems to be (but isn’t) magical — something with operations that are beyond one's comprehension. For people whose lives are surveilled because of (for example) their race, sexuality, gender identity, indigeneity, or immigration status, magic's unknowable nature can act as a form of resistance to efforts to know, categorize, and control their lives and stories. The artists in Like Magic employ technologies of magic towards joy, delight, care, love, and healing, subverting systems that would deny them access to these. Exhibition Programs In Conversation: Like Magic Sunday, October 29 at 12pm Activations of Grace Clark's In a new light (Healing Dirt) Monday, November 13 (10am–5pm) Wednesday, December 13 (10am–5pm) *Future dates to be announced* EVENTS Alvvays | Saturday, September 2 at 8pm Dreamy Canadian indie pop band Alvvays brings “emotional and melodic sophistication” (The New York Times) to the Hunter Center on September 2, with singer-songwriter Tanukichan. Since their self-titled debut album in 2014, Alvvays has wrestled with the woes of the now, looking back at a country past and forward at an uncertain world, reckoning with what we lose whenever we make a choice about what we want to become. Tickets start at $35.10 Little Amal | Sunday, September 10 at 3pm Little Amal — whose name means 'hope' in Arabic — is a 12-foot puppet of a refugee Syrian child who has traveled to 13 countries. MASS MoCA will welcome her as a stop on her tour of the U.S. this season, in a public program in Courtyard A. Amal began her journey from the Syrian border and carries a message of hope for displaced people everywhere, especially children who have been separated from their families. Her urgent message is simple — “don’t forget us.” Free to the public and open to all FreshGrass North Adams | September 22–24 Along with world premieres, emerging artist competitions, farm-fresh food, local brews, and pop-up jam sessions, this is three days of festival magic produced in partnership by MASS MoCA, the FreshGrass Foundation, and No Depression. The FreshGrass North Adams 2023 lineup features Dropkick Murphys Acoustic — playing songs from their two albums with the lyrics of Woody Guthrie — Lukas Nelson + POTR, Sierra Ferrell, Rhiannon Giddens, The Devil Makes Three, and many more.
